Apple researchers train AI drivers to merge lanes in a replicated environment

Apple has not yet openly discussed its research on autonomous vehicles, but it is a proven little trade secret. About 5,000 employees – including some former employees of Drive.ai, an autonomous car company that Apple acquired last year – would be codenamed Project Titan, a joint effort with Volkswagen to make the development of cars and pickups autonomous. And it looks like a pre-printed article published this week on Arxiv.org is pulling the curtain even further: in it, Apple researcher Yichuan Charlie Tang and the team are exploring an AI approach that is progressively creating more diverse environments for the management of scenarios vehicles are involved in a merger.
