WhatsApp has confirmed the release of several new features on its platform. These include a new fade mode, a new View Once feature, and initial multi-device support. These features have been confirmed by none other than Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and WhatsApp chief Will Cathcart.
They shared this information through an exclusive WhatsApp chat with a well-known resource tracker. Cathcart also offers hope to open iOS beta subscriptions and iPad device support in the future.
Popular WhatsApp tracker WABetaInfo was invited to an exclusive group chat with Cathcart and Zuckerberg. The two pilots confirmed in the chat that a new Disappear Mode feature will be launched soon. This will allow messages to disappear in all future chats by default and reduce the WhatsApp experience. Currently, users can enable disappearing messages for groups and chats individually, but the disappearing mode will enable them completely for chats and groups in the app.
Another feature Zuckerberg confirmed during the call is “View Once,” which allows users to upload content and make it disappear after a person sees it. When enabled, the recipient can only open photos and videos once before disappearing from the chat. Zuckerberg and Cathcart also confirmed multi-device support, stating that tests for public beta users will be released in a month or two. Zuckerberg explained that developing the feature took some time as there were several challenges. For example, he said, “It was a big technical challenge to sync all your messages and content.” However, the company has managed to fix all the issues and says users will soon be able to use the same WhatsApp account on multiple devices without logging into any of them.
Cathcart added that WhatsApp can also work on iPad holders to get proper multi-device support. In addition, he added that WhatsApp will soon consider opening beta registrations for a few more iOS users and that users with multiple devices will be able to connect to four devices at the same time.
